We ran out of dishwasher powder yesterday and of course I didn’t realise that until I had fully loaded the dishwasher, with my arms full of baby, in the middle of the morning routine frenzy. There was no way I was leaving the house until that dishwasher went on.
DIY saved the day and it literally took two minutes to make this recipe. We came back to a clean kitchen and spotless dishes! It works so well. There’s no borax in this recipe, as there is a lot of controversy about the safety of using it… lots of dishwasher powder recipes will tell you you need it, but this honestly works just as well, if not better! And of course there’s no other toxic chemicals; better for you, better for the environment! It’s cheaper to make than buying store-bought dishwasher powder too and it goes a long way.
- 3/4 Cup Washing soda
- 3/4 Cup Citric acid
- 1/4 Cup Baking soda
- 1/4 Cup Salt
- 10 Drops Lemon essential oil (or other scent of choice)
- Combine all ingredients, adding the essential oil last.
- You can pop it straight into a jar with a spoon but it may go a bit hard, so you’ll need to crush it up as you use it. Use 1 tablespoon per load.
- If you’d rather make it into dishwasher bricks, just lay it into a square or rectangular container after combining the ingredients. Let it sit for about 20 minutes, then slice it into dishwasher brick shapes (each about the size of about 1 tablespoon) and put it into a jar for later use.
